The true origin of the hammock may never be known, but popular opinion is that the first hammock was used over 1000 years ago in Central America and was made from the bark of the Hamack tree. The first use of the hammock was not for relaxation or recreation at all, but was used for protection from insects and the elements. Because the hammock was easy to make and versatile enough to hang anywhere it was perfect for traveling and hiking.
