The true origin of the hammock may never be known, but popular opinion is that the first hammock was used over 1000 years ago in Central America and was made from the bark of the Hamack tree. The first use of the hammock was not for relaxation or recreation at all, but was used for protection from insects and the elements. Because the hammock was easy to make and versatile enough to hang anywhere it was perfect for traveling and hiking.
Fast forward to the rat race today and hammocks are used to sit back, relax and unwind after a long week at the office. Hammocks can be found in one form or another in most geographic areas. The traditional hammock, which was designed to hang between 2 trees and hold one person has taken on many different shapes and sizes.
Portable hammocks made from parachute silk or nylon some supporting weights up to 350lbs, fold up into a carrying case small enough to fit into a backpack for hiking. Portable campsite hammocks with metal frames and mosquito netting are also available.
For those who prefer to spend time outside in their backyard, the choices are endless. Modern hammocks are available in numerous colors, patterns and materials while classic hammocks still use wooden spreader bars and cotton or nylon rope.
Not only has the styling of the hammock evolved, but the shape as well. For those who would rather enjoy the comfort of a hammock while sitting upright, the hammock chairs was invented. Hammock chairs have also undergone many changes over the years, some similar to the hammock itself. From the bare bones hanging chairs to the deluxe models with wooden arms, footrests, beverage holders and even inflatable pillows there is a hammock chair for everyone.
Almost everyone would love to have a hammock, but not everyone has a backyard, let alone a backyard with trees strategically positioned to support a hammock or hammock chair. This problem led to the design of the hammock and hammock chairs stands. While everyone has a different living situation, the hammock manufacturers have done their best to design a stand to fit almost any space.
One recent design makes it possible to use a hammock with only one tree! Portable hammock chairs stands have been introduced that are perfect for camping. For those who want to bring their hammock chair inside, stands are being developed that will blend with the rest of the interior décor. Perhaps the most outrageous stand introduced in the past few years is the hammock chair trailer hitch stand. Attaching to a standard hitch receiver, this stand supports 2 hammock chairs anywhere you can take your truck or SUV.
